Trident Anesthesia Group, LLC was founded in 1975 by Robert (“Bob”) Blackard, MD, while serving in the United States Navy in Charleston, South Carolina. Originally planning to return home to Winston-Salem, NC, Bob instead chose to stay and help build a new hospital in North Charleston—a leap of faith that would become the foundation of our practice.
Starting as the sole anesthesiologist, Bob grew the practice steadily, welcoming CRNAs, physicians, and support staff over the years. Through nearly three decades of leadership, he built a culture grounded in teamwork, initiative, and patient-centered care.
Today, his vision lives on. What began as a one-physician practice now serves patients across nine locations in the Lowcountry, with a team of anesthesiologists and CRNAs dedicated to exceptional outcomes.
Dr. Blackard is now retired and enjoying life with his wife, Sammye, in Summerville, SC, while continuing to support his community through family, philanthropy, and volunteer work. We are proud to carry forward the legacy he created.
